Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle is the sequel to 2000's hit, Charlie's Angels, which was based on the 1970's hit television show of the same name. The first Charlie's Angels movie played up the campy nature of the series, and spoofed recent action films such as The Matrix and Mission: Impossible 2. It was a non-stop action-comedy that was made to be one thing, and one thing only... FUN! On that level, Charlie's Angels was a wild success. As for this sequel, everything I've written about the first movie applies to it, as well! So much for originality, but then, what else would you expect from a director whose name sounds like it belongs on a fast food menu?
Full Throttle sends the Angels on another thrilling mission of danger and intrigue. You see, someone really evil has stolen 'Halo', a pair of special rings that could blow the cover of every person in the U.S. Government's witness relocation program. Now, the Angels must retrieve the rings before they fall into the wrong hands (or onto the wrong fingers). And why, you may ask, would sensitive, classified information be encoded onto a couple of rings, rather than, say, be secured at some government installation? What about that little thing called... logic? To quote former Bosley, Bill Murray, "It just doesn't matter!"
Speaking of Bosley, this time out he's played by Bernie Mac. While Murray played Bosley as maniacally annoyed, Mac's Bosley is more protective and caring toward the Angels. Why didn't Bill Murray play Bosley again? Is Bernie Mac suppose to be Murray's brother? Who's gonna play Bosley in Charlie's Angels 3, Ben Affleck? Okay everyone, all together now, "IT JUST DOESN'T MATTER! IT JUST DOESN'T MATTER!"
Equally meaningless to our heavenly threesome are the laws of physics, as Drew, Cameron, and Lucy battle their ways through perilous situations with all the style and skill of James Bond and The Powerpuff Girls combined. The action sequences in this movie, more than anything else, are incredibly silly. If this comes as a surprise, then welcome! You must be new here!
Adding to the merry mayhem are more spoofs of movies and television shows, including an absolutely hilarious parody of CSI. Throw in Crispin Glover, reprising his role as the creepy Thin Man, Demi Moore as sassy fallen Angel Madison Lee, and some unexpected cameo appearances, and you've got a sure-fire hit! Full Throttle is Hollywood at its cheesy summer best. But, is it good cinema? Ha! With this much fun, even that just doesn't matter! (And if it does, yikes! You sure made the wrong moviegoing choice!)
